soviet farming project

On my recent trip into the countryside architect Vassily Shetinin pointed out these objects to me. Former water towers on the soviet era farms in the countryside, they continue to function after the farming has stopped. This is represented int he winter by extraordinary ice formations as water is pumped out of the towers even when the temperature is far below zero.
Vassily showed me many of these as we drove through the Russian countryside, and we talked about a project of these towers. The ice forms are beautiful themselves and its seems poignant that these are formed from structures that principly have no function now.

Of course we need the required frost over the winter.
